Why did gold fall on 22 October 2026? Oil, rates and a tech sell-off

Gold fell $116, or 2.8%, on Thursday 22 October 2026, to about $4,025. Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia pushed oil to its highest since May, bets on a US rate rise stayed high, and a sharp fall in tech shares led some investors to sell gold. The next day it closed below $4,000 for the first time since mid-July.

Why dearer oil pushed gold down

War news usually helps gold. People buy it when they are scared. But in 2026 the fear has come mostly through oil.

When oil gets dearer, prices rise everywhere. The Fed (America's central bank) raised interest rates in September to fight inflation, and markets expect it to raise them again by December. Dearer oil makes that more likely.

Gold pays no interest. When rates rise, cash and bonds pay more, so holding gold costs more. That is why oil fear rising is 🔴 bearish for gold while the Fed is fighting inflation.

On 22 October, Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia, including reports of an attack on an Aramco site, pushed Brent oil (the world oil price) to about $112, its highest since May.

The strange part: rates fell, and gold still fell

In the US afternoon, tech shares slumped on worries about how AI spending is being paid for. The Nasdaq fell 2.6% and chip makers fell nearly 7%.

Investors rushed into US government bonds, and bond rates had their biggest one-day drop since March 2023. Lower rates are usually 🟢 bullish for gold. This time gold kept falling.

Reports said some investors sold gold and silver to raise cash and cover losses elsewhere. Silver fell even harder than gold, about 5.8%. In a fast sell-off, people sometimes sell what they can, not what they want to.

The US jobs number

At 13:30 UK / 8:30am New York, US jobless claims came in at 194,000. That is the number of people newly claiming unemployment benefit. Economists expected 200,000.

Fewer claims than expected means a firm job market. That is 🔴 bearish for gold, because it backs higher US rates for longer. Most of gold's fall had already happened before the number came out.

How big was this move?

Gold's record close was $5,414 on 28 January 2026. By the end of 22 October it was about 26% below that. On Friday 23 October it closed at $3,996, its first close below $4,000 since mid-July, and ended the week down 4.1%.

Questions people ask

Why did gold fall on 22 October 2026?

Gold fell 2.8% to about $4,025. Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia pushed oil to its highest since May, which keeps US inflation and interest rates high. A firm US jobs number added to that, and a tech sell-off led some investors to sell gold to cover losses.

Why did gold fall when interest rates fell?

Lower interest rates usually help gold. On 22 October, US bond rates dropped sharply because investors rushed into bonds during a tech sell-off. Reports said some of the same investors sold gold and silver to raise cash, so gold fell anyway.

Is gold going to keep falling?

Nobody knows. What usually matters next is the Fed's decision on Wed 28 Oct at 18:00 UK / 2:00pm New York, then US inflation (PCE) on Thu 29 Oct. A tougher-sounding Fed is usually bearish for gold, a softer one bullish.
