WHY GOLD MOVED Gold …

Gold facts · updated 9 October 2026

How much gold is there in the world?

All the gold ever dug up, in all of human history, would fit in one cube about 22.6 metres wide. Here's how much there is, where it is now, and how much is left underground.

The short answer

About 222,600 tonnes of gold have been mined, ever. Almost all of it still exists.
One cube, 22.6 metres wide. About 7 floors tall.
Nearly half is jewellery. Central banks hold about 18%.
About 61,000 tonnes that we know of is still underground.

All the gold ever mined

The World Gold Council (the gold industry's research body) estimates that about 222,600 tonnes of gold had been mined by mid-2026. That's every ring, coin, bar and tooth filling, from ancient Egypt to today.

Nobody can count every ring, so it's an estimate. But it's the figure most experts use.

How big is all the gold in the world?

Gold is very heavy for its size. So all those tonnes take up surprisingly little space.

Melted into one cube, all the gold ever mined would be about 22.6 metres on each side.
  • About 7 floors tall. A cube 22.6 metres high is about the height of a 7-storey building.
  • Fits on a football pitch. Its base would sit in the middle of one pitch with lots of room to spare.
  • About 4½ Olympic swimming pools. Our sums: the cube holds about 11,500 cubic metres, and an Olympic pool holds at least 2,500.

United StatesAbout 8,100 tonnes
GermanyAbout 3,350 tonnes
ItalyAbout 2,450 tonnes
FranceAbout 2,440 tonnes
China and RussiaAbout 2,300 to 2,400 tonnes each

Why almost all of it still exists

Gold doesn't rust, rot or wear away, so very little is ever lost. Photo: Marko Ivanov / Unsplash

Gold doesn't rust or rot. When people sell old jewellery, it gets melted down and made into something new. So the gold in a ring you buy today could include gold that was mined thousands of years ago.

Known reserves (found, and worth mining at today's prices)About 61,000
Resources (found, but not yet proven worth mining)About 114,400

Known reserves are about a quarter of what's already above ground. At about 3,600 tonnes a year, that's roughly 17 years of mining (our sums). But don't read it as a countdown: new finds keep adding to reserves, and a higher price makes more gold worth digging up.

That rarity is a big part of why people value gold. What moves the price of gold?
