Why Gold Moved Gold …

Fed explained · updated 29 October 2026

The Fed is changing how it meets. What does that mean for gold?

The Fed sets US interest rates, one of the biggest things that move gold. On Wed 28 Oct 2026, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the Fed will hold fewer rate meetings from 2027. Here is what is changing, in plain English.

The short answer

Fewer rate meetings. Eight a year now. From 2027, one meeting a year becomes a "strategy" meeting with no rate vote and no statement. From 2028, two.
No more hints. Since June 2026 the Fed's statement is about half as long, and it no longer hints at its next move.
So each Fed day can surprise. Bigger surprises can mean bigger gold moves, either way.

Why it matters for gold

No hints means more surprises. Markets used to get a steer before each decision. Now they have to guess. That can make Fed days move gold more, up or down.

Fewer meetings means a longer wait. A gap of up to 12 weeks between chances to change rates can make the US jobs report and US inflation data matter even more, because markets have only these to judge the next move.

The textbook stays the same. A tougher Fed (leaning to higher rates) is usually 🔴 bad for gold, because gold pays no interest. A softer Fed (leaning to lower rates) is usually 🟢 good for gold. How the Fed affects gold.

From the Fed's own calendar. One of these will become a strategy meeting with no decision. The Fed says each date is tentative until the meeting before it. 17 Mar is 18:00 UK because US clocks change two weeks before UK clocks. All Fed dates.

Questions people ask

Is the Fed meeting less often?

For setting interest rates, yes: 7 times in 2027 and 6 in 2028, down from 8. The other meetings are for longer-term strategy, with no rate vote and no statement.

Which 2027 meeting will be the strategy meeting?

The Fed has not said yet. One analyst, Omair Sharif of Inflation Insights, expects October 2027.

Can the Fed still change rates between meetings?

Yes. It can act outside its planned meetings if it needs to, though that is rare.

Why does the Fed matter for gold?

Higher US interest rates make savings that pay interest look better than gold, which pays nothing. So the Fed's next move is one of the biggest things gold watches. A tougher Fed is usually bad for gold, a softer Fed usually good. Gold does not always react the same way.
