🕒 Tue 03 Nov, 01:25 UK
• China's central bank raises the reserve ratio banks must hold on foreign currency deposits
• China's central bank adds 621 billion yuan through overnight reverse repos at 1.25 percent
• China's offshore yuan falls 0.26 percent to 6.6642 per dollar, biggest daily drop since June
💡 What it means: China's central bank is trying to stop the yuan falling further. A stronger yuan can mean a stronger dollar, which hurts gold a little.

☀️ Tue 3 Nov · ⚪ MIXED for gold
Gold about $3,920 (up about $10 since Mon 06:00 UK)
📰 What happened
🔴 Overnight: gold slid to about $3,926 by 03:53 UK. Tech shares fell, and some investors sold gold to cover losses.
🟢 Mon 2 Nov: oil fell about 7.6% on hopes of US-Iran peace talks. Cheaper oil gives the US central bank (Fed) less reason to raise rates, so gold closed up $71.
⚪ US factory survey (ISM) came in stronger at 55.5 (above 50 = growing). But factory prices rose less than feared, so the two pulls roughly cancel.

📖 Gold lesson
Gold is meant to be a safe place in a scare. But when shares fall hard, some investors sell what is easiest to sell, and that includes gold. So gold can dip first, before calmer buyers return.

🇮🇳 India is buying less gold. Here's why that matters
India is one of the world's two biggest gold buyers.
From July to September it bought 162.5 tonnes, down 29% on a year ago.
What happened
• Jewellery buying fell 20%
• Gold bars and coins fell 40%
• This year's total is forecast at about 650 tonnes, the lowest since 2020
Why
• High gold prices put buyers off
• A weak monsoon hit farm incomes, and rural India buys over half the country's gold
• Higher import taxes pushed some gold into unofficial routes
What's next
Diwali and the wedding season should lift buying from October to December.
But high prices and weak rural incomes will still hold it back, the World Gold Council says.
What it means for gold
🔴 Less buying from India is a small drag on gold.
🟢 A festive pickup is a small push the other way.
⚪ MIXED, and a small effect. The Fed, the dollar and fear usually matter far more day to day.

It says they cover Iran's nuclear programme and its frozen funds.
It cites unnamed sources. Neither side has confirmed it.
Textbook
🟢 BULLISH for gold. A deal could bring oil prices down.

⚡ 🔴 BEARISH for gold · 🇺🇸 US job openings jump to 7.52 million · 🔥🔥 MEDIUM
🕒 Tue 3 Nov, 15:00 UK / 10:00 New York
What happened
US job openings (JOLTS) count jobs employers want to fill.
Actual: 7.52 million, the most since May
Expected: 7.13 million (prev 7.08 million)
Surprise: stronger than expected
Why it matters
September also had more hires and fewer layoffs.
A firm jobs market gives the Fed more reason to raise rates.
That usually weighs on gold.
What gold did
Gold was about $3,968 at 13:33 UK, after an unconfirmed report of US-Iran concessions.
It was about $3,930 when checked at 15:50 UK / 10:50 New York.
We have no price from just before 15:00 UK, so the reaction to this report is not known.
16:22 UK · Why it faded
🔍 Why gold gave it back · Tue 3 Nov
What happened
By 13:33 UK / 8:33 New York, an Arab news site reported US and Iran concessions on a draft deal.
Neither side confirmed it.
Gold jumped from about $3,932 to about $3,970 around then.
By 16:12 UK / 11:12 New York it was back near $3,936.
Textbook
🟢 BULLISH for gold. A deal could pull oil lower.
Cheaper oil makes US rate rises less likely, which gold usually likes.
What changed
Times: UK / New York
• By 14:34 / 9:34: Iran's security council secretary called the US reply "not convincing"
• 15:00 / 10:00: the US job openings report showed 7.52 million vs 7.10 million expected
Why it matters
Mohsen Rezaei said the Strait of Hormuz stays shut until Iran's 7 conditions are met.
More open jobs give the Fed more reason to raise rates, which usually weighs on gold.
Most extra openings were in state and local government and business services.
📖 Lesson
A news report is not a deal. A jump on one can fade fast.

🧠 Deep dive: The US struck Iran. So why did gold fall? · Tue 3 Nov
What happened
Overnight into Tue 3 Nov, the US hit a site on Iran's Qeshm Island. Oil rose.
Gold fell about 1.1%, to near $3,904, by mid-morning UK.
Some investors also cashed in gold to cover losses on tech shares.
At 13:33 UK, a report said the US and Iran had both made concessions. Gold was near $3,968.
Textbook
War is meant to lift gold. Worried investors turn to it.
That pull is still there. But this year, oil pulls harder.
How it works
• Fighting near the Gulf can push oil prices up
• Dearer oil pushes up fuel and shop prices
• That gives the Fed more reason to raise interest rates
• Gold pays no interest, so higher rates usually weigh on it
Real examples
• 8 Apr: news of a two-week ceasefire lifted gold almost 2%
• Even then, gold was down over 8% since the Iran war began on 28 Feb
• Mon 2 Nov: Brent oil fell 7.6% on peace hopes. Gold rose 1.8%
Why it matters
The Fed kept rates the same on Wed 28 Oct, at 3.75% to 4%.
(The Fed sets a range, not one number.)
Two of the 12 voters wanted a quarter-point rise.
Markets put a December rise at about 75%, no rise at about 25% (CME FedWatch).
What's next
US jobs report (new jobs in October): Fri 6 Nov, 13:30 UK / 8:30 New York.
Strong hiring would give the Fed another reason to raise. Not what gold wants.
Trump said the US will do "what has to be done" on Iran. Watch what that does to oil.
📖 In one line
Right now, war news that lifts oil hurts gold. Peace news that cools oil helps it.

🌙 Gold closed · Tue 3 Nov · $3,929, down 0.4%
What happened
Gold dipped under $3,900 in Asian trading.
It climbed to about $3,970 by the early US morning.
Then it slipped back, and strong US jobs data added to the fall.

• Oil slid after Trump said US aid to Israel ends by the end of 2026
• 15:00 UK / 10:00 New York: US job openings (JOLTS) beat forecasts
Why it matters
⚪ MIXED for gold.
Cheaper oil eases price worries, which gold usually likes.
